Schäfers Hans Joachim

Dr. Hans Joachim Schäfers is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Saarland, Chairman of the Surgical Center, University Hospitals of Saarland and Director of the Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, University Hospitals of Saarland. He received his medical degree from the University of Essen in 1982 and his Ph. D. in 1992.  Dr. Schafers  completed his residency in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Surgical Center, Hannover Medical School and fellowship at the Dept. of Thoracic Surgery, University of Toronto  

Dr. Schafers has published numerous scientific papers and chapters. He is an ad hoc  
reviewer of 7 surgical journals and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Zeitschrift für Thorax-, Herz- und Gefäßchirugie and Zeitschrift für Kardiologie. 


Dr. Schafers is a member of the Council of Clinical Medicine and Committee for Improvement of Teaching, Faculty of Medicine at University of Saarland. He serves on the Board of Directors of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and is also a member of the Postgraduate Education Committee and Database Committee. Other Academic Societies that Dr. Schafers is a member of, are: American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, International Society for Heart Transplantation, European Association for Cardio- Thoracic Surgery (he is a member of Postgraduate Education Committee), German Society of Thoracic Surgery, German Society for Cardiology, German Society for Surgery and German Transplant Society. 


In 1991 Dr Schafers received the Research Award for Cardiovascular Surgery, University ofGiessen and in 1993  Presidential Award of the International College of Chest Physicians  (Clinical   contributions to lung transplantation).
